Tokyo: The Last War

Toho brought George back from Hollywood for its 1989 sequel to Teito Monogatari — released in the West as Tokyo: The Last War, known at home as Teito Taisen (帝都大戦) ¹ — and gave him a credit that didn’t fit the usual department label: 超現実視覚効果, commonly rendered here as “Surreal Visual Effects.” A literal translation and image of the Japanese credit are still needed before making broader claims about how novel the title was. Takashige Ichise (later the producer behind Ring and Ju-on) directed, with Ngai Choi Lam, the Hong Kong director of Riki-Oh, as general director.

Two images are repeatedly associated with George’s work: the altered face of the villain Kato (Kyusaku Shimada), and the human-faced bugs (人面虫), larvae with distorted human features and a thick wet surface. The surviving records do not establish the appliance layers, internal controls or shot-by-shot division of labor.
