Toho brought George back to Japan for its 1989 sequel to Teito Monogatari, released in the West as Tokyo: The Last War and known at home as Teito Taisen (帝都大戦). Nintendo’s 1998 filmography lists it among his credits, printing the title as 帝都対戦. 1 His credit on the film reads 超現実視覚効果, rendered on this site as “Surreal Visual Effects.” A literal translation and an image of the Japanese credit are still needed before saying more about what the title covered. Takashige Ichise (later the producer behind Ring and Ju-on) directed, with Nam Nai-choi, the Hong Kong director of Riki-Oh, as general director.
Two images are repeatedly associated with George’s work: the altered face of the villain Kato (Kyusaku Shimada), and the human-faced bugs (人面虫), larvae with distorted human features and a thick wet surface. Nobody has documented the appliance layers, internal controls or shot-by-shot division of labor.
A related sequence features mutated homunculus children. No source describes how it was done.
