Illustrator Hajime Sorayama didn’t speak English and director Stuart Gordon didn’t speak Japanese, so George’s shop, S.M.G. Inc., became the bridge: Space Truckers wanted its cyborg army to look like a Sorayama illustration come to life, sleek, chrome, erotic-metallic lines, and George’s shop translated Sorayama’s drawings into wearable silver Bio-Mech Warriors. Their segmented armor preserves the illustrator’s polished, erotic-machine silhouette. The exact materials and fabrication locations are undocumented.
The film reunited George with the Re-Animator/Society circle — Gordon directing, Brian Yuzna producing — on a comedy with real money behind it, twenty-five million dollars, unusual for a Gordon picture. Beyond the cyborg army, the effects include Captain Macanudo’s (Charles Dance) exposed mechanical chest and the Square Pigs, cube-shaped livestock conceived as a shipping joke.
